Joseph C. McCarthy, MD

Dr. McCarthy is the Vice Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Director of the Kaplan Center for Joint Reconstructive Surgery at the Newton Wellesley Hospital. Dr. McCarthy specializes in total joint arthroplasty and hip arthroscopy. After earning his medical degree from Georgetown University Medical School in Washington, DC, Dr. McCarthy completed an internship in internal medicine at Georgetown University Hospital, residencies in general and orthopaedic surgery at Tufts New England Medical Center and a Fellowship in reconstructive joint surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He participates in residency training programs for orthopaedic residents from Harvard and Tufts Medical schools and is extensively involved in research of early joint disease and arthritis of the hip and knee.
Active in numerous professional societies, Dr. McCarthy is the past President of the American Association of Hip & Knee Surgeons, elected to the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, has served on the Board of Directors for the Hip Society and is an active member in various other orthopaedic organizations.
Dr. McCarthy has authored or co-authored 13 book chapters, authored three textbooks, published more than 50 peer review articles, and currently serves as a consultant reviewer for a vast number of orthopaedic journals, including the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. He was presented with the prestigious AAOS AuFranc Award in 2001, The Frank Stinchfield Award in 2007 and has given many scientific presentations both nationally and internationally.
